Illustrated Book Covers

I've had a number of opportunities to illustrate book covers for publishers as well as one of the self-publishing editors I work with. These range from essays to mysterys to horror stories.

In 2024 I was asked to illustrate the cover of an anthology published each year on a natural feature of Maine. This year it’s the North Woods and the publisher asked if we could recycle the “Goose Pond” sky (see below) that was never released.
Late 2023, I was asked by a former McGraw-Hill colleague to help with a self-publishing project by a minister. He wanted to rewrite the Gospels as if they took place in 1970s Maine. I drew a large map of the state showing scenes significant to the story, and colorized one to put on the cover.
“Goose Pond” was a book about three domestic geese who escape their captivity and learn how to live in the wild. The author, Lauren Weiner, based the story on a pond near where she lived in Oregon. Unfortunately, the publisher had to cancel the publication of the book, but I was very pleased with how the cover came out.
Cathie Pelletier is a well-known Maine author who has been very prolific over the years. This illustration was for her title “Mystery Traveler at Lake Fortune,” a young adult novel coming out in 2023. Unfortunately, the publisher decided not to use this illustration, going with the author’s husband’s artwork instead.
Dan Dunkle is the executive editor for three newspapers at MaineStay Media’s Camden (Maine) office. As he also enjoys self-publishing horror stories, he asked if I would illustrate his latest collection, due out spring of 2023. I don’t do a lot of self-publishing projects, but as I have a working relationship with Dan, I agreed to do it
Tim Cotton is a retired detective from the Bangor (Maine) Police Department. He ran the department’s Facebook page and his essays there gained him followers worldwide. This is his third published collection, which came out to bookstores in 2022.
